STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — RE: Alleged Personnel Custody Matter
Following recent assertions by the Islamic Republic regarding three individuals purported to be military aviators, the State of Qatar wishes to clarify its position on this matter through established diplomatic channels.
It is the official position of Qatar that no such individuals are currently held in any facility under Qatari jurisdiction. Furthermore, Qatar maintains that the incident referenced in aforementioned claims—specifically the alleged downing of two aircraft—occurred in circumstances that remain, at this time, subject to ongoing technical review.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that all parties involved in the current operational theatre are encouraged to pursue verification through neutral third-party assessment mechanisms. Qatar has consistently demonstrated its commitment to international law and the Geneva Conventions, and any suggestion otherwise would constitute a mischaracterisation of the facts as currently understood.
Regarding the three individuals in question: Qatar neither confirms nor denies their presence, status, or location. Such matters, should they exist, would fall under protocols established in accordance with bilateral agreements that may or may not be operative at this time.
It should be noted that the absence of confirmation is not, in itself, confirmation of absence. Qatar reserves the right to redefine the parameters of this statement following consultations with relevant stakeholders.
