RABAT — Following a formal letter from King Mohammed VI, Morocco has officially designated a major highway corridor through Western Sahara as the Trump Peace Highway, effective immediately.
The initiative represents a significant diplomatic development in the region’s territorial negotiations. According to a statement from the Royal Cabinet’s Strategic Infrastructure Division, the naming convention addresses the century-long dispute over Western Sahara’s sovereignty through what officials describe as ‘innovative naming protocols that transcend traditional border frameworks.’
The highway, which traverses territory whose international status remains unresolved under UN Resolution 2703, will feature signage in both Arabic and English. The Royal Directorate of Communications confirmed that the English-language markers will include phonetic transliterations for diplomatic delegations unfamiliar with Arabic orthography.
Western Sahara’s status has been contested since 1975. The UN maintains that the territory’s future should be determined through a self-determination referendum. The Polisario Front, which represents the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, has not yet issued a statement regarding the highway naming.
Moroccan officials indicated that the highway designation serves as a ‘tangible symbol of forward momentum’ and represents ‘a commitment to infrastructure development in all regions under Moroccan administrative authority.’ The Royal Cabinet noted that similar naming initiatives may be considered for other disputed infrastructure projects pending further review.
Highway construction and maintenance will proceed according to established protocols, regardless of the territory’s final political status.
