Following the recent separation of military newspaper editor Erik Slavin, the Department of Defense has initiated establishment of the Censorship Response and Institutional Narrative Protection Division (CRINPD), effective September 2026.
Mr. Slavin’s stated position that censorship would constitute a hypothetical red line was identified during routine communications audit as requiring institutional response infrastructure. The department determined that existing protocols were insufficient to address personnel who articulate theoretical objections to information control prior to actual implementation of such measures.
The new division will operate across all service branches and civilian defense contractors. Its mandate includes pre-emptive identification of employees who may express concerns about censorship in hypothetical, speculative, or conditional contexts. Training modules are being developed to clarify that while censorship itself remains theoretical, the infrastructure to manage discussion of censorship is now operational.
Internal communications note that CRINPD will coordinate with the Office of Strategic Narrative Alignment and the Public Affairs Contingency Planning Bureau. Budget allocation has been classified. A spokesperson confirmed that the division’s activation represents “standard institutional evolution in response to identified communication vulnerabilities.”
Mr. Slavin’s dismissal has been categorized as a personnel action unrelated to the new division’s establishment. The timing is coincidental. All inquiries should be directed to the department’s Public Affairs office, which will not be responding to inquiries.
